Cancer has passed heart disease as the #1 killer in the U.S. However, more people still die of heart related problems than any time in history. The medical community has responded with a record number of anticoagulant drug prescriptions costing billions of dollars. Is fish oil blood thinner the natural answer to this chemical onslaught?

This article will suggest the use of omega 3 fish oil blood thinner as a dietary supplement to people with heart disease and as a way to prevent it.

What is coagulation?

According to the American Heart Association anticoagulant drugs “inhibit the ability of blood to clot, or coagulate. They don’t dissolve existing blood clots. They prevent new clots from forming or existing clots from getting larger.”

Read between the lines here. These drugs only help if you already have a problem. They are not designed to be part of a healthy disease preventing diet.

Why not, you ask?

Here is a general list of possible side effects.

“Paralysis, headaches, shortness of breath, difficulty in swallowing, and pain in the chest, abdomen, joints, or muscles. Patients should be wary of nosebleeds or blood in their urine. Other side effects can include but are not limited to nausea, fever, skin necrosis and hypersensitivity.”

What are fish oil blood thinner benefits?

It is well known that omega 3 fish oil reduces LDL [the "bad"] cholesterol and increases HDL [the "good"] cholesterol. A higher ratio of HDL to LDL means there is less cholesterol in our blood. This means fewer blood clots and less artery hardening. Arteries that are flexible and not constricted are good signs of health.

Is there any thing else?

Yes. You can connect a line through a series of studies starting with the study of Greenland Eskimos in the 1970’s, through the 1998 Hibbeln research to the recently published Farzaneh-Far [University of California-San Francisco] study. The methods are different but the results all point to one conclusion. The omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil significantly reduce the risk of numerous types of heart disease, not just blood clotting.

In fact, Dr. Ramin Farzaneh-Far said “The main result from our study is that patients with high levels of Omega-3 fish oil in the blood appear to have a slowing of the biological aging process over five years.” The aging process he is speaking about is not limited to the heart.

What seems to be happening is that the omega 3s in fish oil protect valuable genetic material from inflammation, pollution, obesity and other results of the modern world. People who understand the fish oil blood thinner connection are beginning to understanding that it is also good for the eyes, joints, skin, brain and immune system.

If you are already on an anticoagulant drug, have a serious talk with your doctor. If whatever drug you are using reacts badly with fish oil supplements, try to find one that does not. Do you really want to be on a drug that reacts negatively with food?
